- South Dakota officials have reopened Interstate 90 between Spearfish Exit 14 and Piedmont Exit 44 in both directions, about a day earlier than expected.

Drivers are reminded that winter driving conditions still exist on I-90 and on many highways especially in western and central South Dakota.

Officials are also cautioning drivers in other areas of the state that strong winds of 30-40 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 miles per hour are making travel extremely hard, especially for semi-trucks and other high profile vehicles.

That segment of Interstate will remain closed until conditions improve and crews are able to clear the roadway.

"The National Weather Service has said that wind and blowing snow-strong winds overnight-so we're anticipating the closure to last overnight and then it just depends what it looks like at daylight", Sandal says. High-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks and campers should use extreme caution.

Highway 85 from the Wyoming state line to near Cheyenne Crossing is also closed due to a wreck that blocked the highway.

Winter maintenance has been suspended in some areas where it is too risky for the plows to be on the roadway.

Travel will be hard, especially over and near the northern Black Hills on I-90.

A no-travel advisory has been issued for parts of the area.

Motorists are also encouraged to check conditions at www.safetravelusa.com/sd or by dialing 5-1-1 before heading out.
