The two linchpins of Herman's off-field staff Houston - strength coach Yancy McKnight and director of football operations Fernando Lovo - will be joining him there.
The Texas Longhorns' season ended on Friday with a loss to TCU, and they already have a new coach in Tom Herman.
After 2 highly successful season at UH, Herman accepted the head coaching position at the University of Texas on Saturday.
Instead, he got a six-turnover performance in a loss at Kansas, which hadn't won a Big 12 game since November 8, 2014. The loss dropped Strong to 16-21 at Texas and he's the first coach in program history with three consecutive losing seasons.
"The opportunity to come back to Texas is a dream come true for me and my family, and I can't thank President (Gregory) Fenves and Mike Perrin enough for providing me with this incredible opportunity", Herman said, via Texas' team website.
In addition to his time at Houston, Herman has deep ties in the state of Texas.
"Coaches and player will come and go but no one can take away the accomplishments that belong to this University", Herman wrote.
He plans to talk soon with Texas running back D'Onta Foreman, who led the nation in rushing with 2,028 yards this season, to gauge the junior's interest in returning next season versus entering the National Football League draft. The first thing he'll have to do is get connect with the players who had deep relationships with Charlie Strong.
Herman in as new coachThe attention shifts towards Tom Herman.
Texas fired coach Charlie Strong Saturday morning. Herman was hired so quickly after Strong was sacked - within hours - that it demonstrated how unified school administrators and influential donors were in a desperate rush to snatch him up before anyone else did. Three years ago, it took Texas about three weeks and flirtations with several other coaches, before Strong was hired. Fenves and Perrin have been in their jobs less than two years.
"We love that man", said linebacker and Mesquite Poteet alum Malik Jefferson about Strong. The terms of Herman's five-year deal with Texas have not yet been released but are expected to be approved by the UT System Board of Regents this week. He spent a season at Texas as a graduate assistant early in his career under former Longhorns coach Mack Brown.
Kevin Sumlin coached the Cougars for four seasons before leaving for Texas A&M. Unless they agree on a buyout or he gets a job elsewhere, UT will have to pay him $5 million a year until his contract is up.
Texas moved quickly to replace him. That case is pending before the state Supreme Court.
"I want to thank the University of Houston, the administration, the fans and especially the players for an unbelievable two years". But that success only compounded the frustration over his losses that were too many to overcome. Herman says he ready to handle it all.
