The mayor said he wasn't aware of any surveillance footage from the immediate vicinity, and the office sits where there wouldn't normally be foot traffic late at night - in a decades-old retail complex that backs up to a wooded area and is set back from a main road.

The glass bottle containing a flammable liquid ignited inside the strip-mall office, burning furniture and campaign signs before extinguishing. An adjacent building was spray painted with a swastika and the message, "Nazi Republicans get out of town or else".

A burned couch is shown next to warped campaign signs at the Orange County Republican Headquarters in Hillsborough, NC on Sunday, Oct. 16 2016. "Very grateful that everyone is safe", Hillary Clinton wrote.

"An attack on our political system is an attack on us all", the Republican vice-presidential candidate told reporters after touring the inside of the torched office.

The suspected firebombing happened between midnight Saturday and the time of the call at 8:54 a.m. Sunday, police believe.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee for president said on Twitter that the attack "is horrific and unacceptable".

The Indiana governor is meeting Tuesday with local Orange County Republicans ahead of two rallies elsewhere in North Carolina.

The Republican officials that joined Pence were Orange County GOP chair Daniel Ashley and State Party Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse.

The Republican vice presidential nominee stated that though the attack was "an act of political terrorism", it has not received extensive media coverage because the media loves to hate Republicans.

Woodhouse made the good point that political headquarters are especially busy at this point in the election, and staff and volunteers often are working around the clock. "The increased patrols is a proactive measure to deter potential criminal and identify suspicious activity", said Susan Danielsen, public information officer for the Greensboro Police Department.

"To those perpetrators, we simply say we will not be intimidated", Mr. Pence said, speaking from outside the Orange County GOP office.

The weekend firebombing episode become fodder for claims by Trump that the election is "rigged" in Clinton's favor, reflecting the intensity surrounding of the campaign in the final weeks of the race.

According to Hillsborough police, no one was injured in the incident.

Governor Pat McCrory answers press questions and discusses the impact of the vandalism and firebombing incident on the upcoming election.

The crime occurred less than a month before Election Day, on November 8, and major party candidates Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton both condemned the attack in the battleground state that could play a pivotal role in the presidential race.
