A Maryland police officer was suspended Tuesday after a photo revealed a hat of right-wing militia group the "Oath Keepers" in his police vehicle.

Gillian Thompson told WBFF that she saw the hat inside a parked police auto near a Whole Foods in Annapolis Monday, and took photographs because she was familiar with the controversial patriot group.

"The officer has been suspended because, flat-out, it's a violation of our rules and policy to have anything political in your police auto", Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant Ryan Frashure told local Fox News affiliate WBFF.

The "Oath Keepers" is made up mostly of current and former police and military, who claim to be defending the United States Constitution. Frashure identified the officer as a nine-year veteran of the department. Organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League classify the Oath Keepers as an extremist branch of the militia movement.

"Espousing political ideology while representing the police department is unacceptable behavior and prohibited by our departmental policies", said AACPD Chief Timothy Altomare.

Despite the incident and the somewhat contentious national climate surrounding the USA presidential election, Altomare does not feel that any formal re-training is required, Frashure said. "Officers should know better and 99.9 percent of them do".

The officer in question is being paid while he's suspended from the force.

In 2014, armed members showed up at protests in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer.

The anti-government group also supported the "Bundy Ranch" armed dispute over federal land in Nevada.

They are noted for involvement in the Ferguson riots and the occupation of a National Widlife Refuge in OR in support of the Bundy family.
