Blue Jays stave off ALCS elimination, beat Cleveland Indians 5-1

The Blue Jays are on the board in the ALCS, but some of their biggest bats have yet to make an impact. "They stepped up pretty good". Carried by a brilliant bullpen, the Indians have limited a unsafe Blue Jays lineup to three runs in three games.

"All you've got to do is go look at video and try to count how many times they've thrown pitches over the heart of the plate", Toronto slugger Jose Bautista said. Keep the momentum on our side because I know we have every bit of confidence in them. The Blue Jays' offense finally broke through in Game 4 and will tee off on the Indians' rookie lefty to send the series back to Cleveland. He made one start, holding Kansas City to a run and three hits in five innings on September 30.

Aaron Sanchez allowed only two hits across six innings, while there was a home run for Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion produced an important two-run single in the seventh.

"We've got our work cut out for us", Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

"Say what you will about the history, but we've got a chance", she said.

Donaldson's solo shot to left-center field off Corey Kluber in the third put the Blue Jays ahead for the first time all series.

Saunders spent his first six seasons with the Mariners before playing these past two for the Blue Jays.

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman (0-1) allowed three hits, including two home runs, three walks and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. "I don't think (the short rest) physically affected me".

"I even had a soldering iron in my hotel room", Bauer said.

That win came in 2004 in a memorable ALCS win against the New York Yankees, after which the Red Sox went on to win the World Series. And then if you do win that game, maybe it affects their 'pen since you've got three games in a row.

The real reason, though, while far from the lone reason, they are on the verge of sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays out of the American League Championship Series is the chaw-packing, bald-headed manager expertly pulling the strings from the Cleveland dugout.

"Just concentrate on the mitt, concentrate on (catcher) Roberto (Perez), and just pitch".

The Indians didn't have another baserunner after that.

Palms could get sweaty if the Indians do not end the series in Toronto.

"Maybe we're just saving it for Games 4, 5, 6 and 7", he said. The 2007 Colorado Rockies and 2014 Kansas City Royals both did it.

Cleveland has won nine straight dating to the regular season.

Bauer told Passan that he repeatedly bugged the Indians' medical staff to cauterize his finger wound shut with a soldering iron.

"Jason Kipnis also homered for Cleveland, while Michael Saunders homered for Toronto".

Kluber was pulled after 89 pitches.

He was 9-10 with a 4.37 earned-run average in the regular season. "But I've seen it too many times. He's been wonderful. He's obviously grown over the years because he wanted to". Asked what he's learned about Merritt, Gibbons said: "What I know about him?" "To get this opportunity is awesome".

"I kind of believe you make your own luck, and you go out there and you create your own destiny". He's allowed five hits over 17 1/3 scoreless innings in his postseason career. The stakes were much higher for Schilling than they were for Bauer. Those three divided up the last 14 outs and delivered the Indians a 3-0 series lead. He'd been pushed back two days to Game 3 after cutting his finger last week repairing one of the drones he enjoys flying as a hobby. Toronto has scored only one run in the ALCS so far, failing to break through against Cleveland's starters and looking overmatched against the Indians' Andrew Miller-led bullpen.
