New England Patriots rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett suffered a torn thumb ligament in his right (throwing) hand in Thursday night's win over theHouston Texans and will require surgery, according to WEEI radio in Boston. O'Brien looks really good until he goes up against Belichik, O'Brien's squad suddenly can't do anything right.

At the 6-yard line, Brissett made a quick shift to his left and watched as free safety Andre Hal whiffed on a tackle and Malcolm Mitchell blocked downfield to neutralize cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

Osweiler on the loss: "I felt like we had a great week of preparation, very focused".

Luckily, New England has an extra-long week between this Thursday game and the next game. But it was what he didn't do - no interceptions, no fumbles and only one sack - that helped his team beat a mistake-prone Texans team. New England planned on Garoppolo starting the first four games of the season before turning the reins back over to Brady, but injuries to both Garoppolo and Brissett have thrown the Patriots for a loop. The Texans had a chance to get on the board just before halftime, but that drive stalled at midfield.

Belichick rolled the dice by not adding another quarterback to the roster during the short week, and the trust he had in rookie Jacoby Brissett proved to be spot on.

"You can say I'm making up excuses but the way the games have been played, and the results from the matchups are identical makes me question O'Brien's intentions". But they know they'll have to get over it quickly to avoid it carrying over into their next game.

T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree had tryouts with the Patriots last week and one of them may be signed if it looks like Garoppolo can't play next week.

First of all, the 2001 Patriots were shepherded by the running of Antowain Smith, whose 1,157 yards on the year assisted Brady immensely.

Leaping with Lambeau: With the win, Belichick tied Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame coach Curly Lambeau for fourth on the NFL's all-time list with 226 regular-season victories. "You never know what's going to happen in the National Football League". "For the record and Broncos fans may jump in and agree when I say, Osweiler didn't play bad against the Patriots past year. He is now only behind Tom Landry (250), George Halas (318) and Don Shula (328)".
