Although there were many names of note inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday, no one's speech was quite as gracious, real and moving as that of Allen Iverson, who admittedly has been through many ups and downs in his life and career.

Presented with the first orange jacket after an unveiling, Hall of Fame chairman Jerry Colangelo quipped, "We'll certainly be seen wherever we are". "I think this spot belongs to the great Allen Iverson. But some years some of them do stand out". But despite his diminutive size he was a workhorse who averaged 41.1 minutes per game in his career, fourth all-time, and he ranks seventh in National Basketball Association history with 26.7 points per game, leading the league in scoring average four times.

Yao's career ended early because of foot injuries in 2011. Swoopes told a story of O'Neal promising her $1 million if she would fake a fall during the class' walk to the stage.

Allen Iverson meant a lot to teammates, coaches, and fans all around the league (including me). "I wouldn't miss it for the world". All my family, everybody will be there. His only trip to the NBA Finals came in 2001, when he was named the league MVP but the Philadelphia 76ers lost the final to O'Neal and the Lakers. Settling into his chair in front of a throng of reporters after the jacket event, Shaquille O'Neal playfully needled Iverson's no-show. "We're similar in the aspect that we did it our way". Where am I exactly going with this?

Fighting tears throughout his extended speech, Iverson thanked former Georgetown coach John Thompson "for saving my life". I'm looking at his shoes, and I'm like, man, he's got on the Jordans!

He especially thanked former friends who showed him the true meaning of friendship. "I know greatness when it comes to basketball".

In maybe the most memorable moment of his address, Iverson recalled his first time playing against his idol, Michael Jordan.

"And obviously Shaq, dominant, big man, controlled the paint, which really emphasised the importance of having a big man", Mourning said. "You got to have (guts) to pull off a move against a legend like that".

"My parents were basketball players back to the 1970s", Yao, the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, said at the ceremony in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Swoopes was a 6-time WNBA All-Star and 3-time league MVP who averaged 15 points over 12 seasons. Yao said in a statement announcing a youth basketball partnership with NBA China in 2012.

Brown continued, "He's made me a better coach because of the relationship we had and the time we had together". To me it was so gratifying to be able to cover him there, I could speak Chinese to him afterwards in the locker room.
