With nine nominations, HBO's Game of Thrones is expected to clean up on the night earning the most nominations, while FX's The Americans and U.S. breakout Mr. Robot are hotly tipped to bag awards.

The cast and crew of "Game of Thrones" winners of the award for outstanding drama series pose in the press room at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Louis-Dreyfus has been an Emmy favorite for years, winning comedy acting awards for "Seinfeld" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine" before dominating the category with her work on "Veep".

"We need to stop violence against trans women and topple the patriarchy", said Soloway, whose show is about a trans woman.

Actor Courtney B. Vance made his political leanings known as he accepted the lead actor in a limited series or movie trophy for his role as lawyer Johnnie Cochran in "The People v. O.J. Simpson", exclaiming, "Obama out!"

In accepting the award, Louis-Dreyfus said she'd like to apologize for the current state of American politics, joking that her show seems to have morphed from comedy to documentary during the current contentious election season.

"There is nearly as much drama in the race for best drama actor", said Gold Derby editor Tom O'Neil.

It is the fifth time in a row Louis-Dreyfus has won the award for her role in the United States version of BBC comedy The Thick Of It.

Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams were all nominated in the Supporting Actress Category while Kit Harington and former Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage were nominated for best Supporting Actor; the respective trophies went to Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) and Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), both of whom were not present at the ceremony.

One of them, Sara Paulson, won for outstanding lead actress in a limited series.

Tambor won his second straight Emmy for playing a transgender woman. "What's great about Netflix, for us, is that they gave us a lot of freedom and trusted us to pursue our personal stories, and that's why they're rewarded with stuff that feels fresh".

Perhaps Kimmel's most well-crafted remark, which sparked a roar of approval from the audience as much for its pithiness as its wit: The much-honored Amazon transgender series "Transparent", he said, "was born a drama, but it identifies as a comedy".

She ended by chanting, "Topple the patriarchy".

The blood-spattered, sex-filled saga about noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne took home the most coveted prize of the night, the best drama Emmy, along with statuettes for writing and directing.

Soloway said Trump is "one of the most risky monsters", while speaking to reporters backstage at the Emmys after winning the best director prize.

Henry Winkler offered a loving tribute to director/producer Garry Marshall who died in July. The two were on The Larry Sanders Show together.

But back to those big wins.

By the way, "Thrones" won't have a chance for a three-peat.

This summer at the Television Critics Association fall preview, HBO announced that "Game of Thrones" will officially end with season 8.
