NASCAR fans, and more specifically Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fans received an update on Friday that some had considered, but many had not.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not race again this season.

Earnhardt in a written statement said it was disappointing, but, "I know this is the right thing for my long-term health and career". "So, I'm very positive and feeling very good and am confident about the future".

"But we also don't want to take any risks to reinjure ourselves or put ourselves in a situation where we essentially erase all the hard work we did to get better".

Jeff Gordon will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet at Darlington this weekend for the ailing Dale Jr., who has not competed since the July race at Kentucky Speedway.

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s concussion-like symptoms were so severe when he first visited the University of Pittsburgh's concussion program that Dr. Micky Collins said Sunday his primary objective was to see the third-generation driver "become a human being again". "So I am positive that we are going to get Dale back to being a race vehicle driver", Collins said. We've had incredible support from everyone involved with the team, including all of our sponsors.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Dr. Collins both confirmed that Dale's mood, anxiety, vision, and balance have all improved since Dale was first diagnosed after the crash earlier this summer.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has no plans on retiring and hopes to be back in the race auto for the Daytona 500 in February.

Dr. Collins said the removal of the stress of worrying about when and if he would return to the track this season - actually made August 24 - has already accelerated Earnhardt's recovery. In the past couple of weeks, it's gotten to the where I feel a lot more comfortable going out and being observed.

"I look up to him for what he's doing".

For the last six races, Alex Bowman and Jeff Gordon have substituted in driving the No. 88.

He's missed the last 6 races recovering from concussion-like symptoms and recently announced he wouldn't race the rest of 2016.

"I have a passion and desire to drive and I enjoy it".

Craven, who returned to win two races following his concussion issues, could hear the drive and determination in Earnhardt's voice on Sunday.

"The second goal is Dale becoming a race auto driver again, and I'm very confident that we're moving in the right direction in that respect".

"You know your body and you know your mind, and you know when something is not quite right", Earnhardt said at the time. His contract with HMS expires at the end of next season and Earnhardt, who's suffered multiple concussions over the years, is getting married and wants to start a family.

"Jeff and Alex will give us a great opportunity over the rest of the season". "I struggled later in my career with night races. Bowman will drive the No. 88 for the other eight races beginning at Chicagoland Speedway on September 18".
