Oakland Raiders ready for primetime after Week 1 comeback win

As the Oakland Raiders said in the locker room following their come-from-behind 35-34 victory over the New Orleans Saints, guts had little to do with coach Jack Del Rio going for a two-point conversion with 47 seconds remaining, rather than sticking with convention and kicking the extra point to tie.

Del Rio said Monday that Smith will be back in the starting lineup for Sunday's home opener against Atlanta. I know that might be really unfair, but really good defenses don't give up over 150 yards rushing EVER, and don't squander 14 point second half leads.

Head coach Sean Payton, who has a history of changing kickers, gave Lutz a vote of confidence after the game.

Amidst all this 7-9 rubble, the Saints still have one of the all-time 6-foot overachievers in the game, Hall of Fame-bound quarterback Drew Brees. Seriously, can you even imagine the comments section of Raider sites across the internet if Crabtree had dropped that ball? "You feel like you have the momentum, and let's dial it up and let's win the game", Brees said. "Showing the belief in our group to go down and do the things we needed to do to win that game".

It is only Week 1, and two games remain to be played on Monday night, but thus far the National Football League has produced as many 400-yard passers (one, Drew Brees, 423 yards in a Saints loss) this season as 100-yard rushers (Lamar Miller, Texans, 106 yards).

Somehow, Packers quarterback Rodgers got rid of the ball with a guy pulling on him and, some way, Davante Adams caught it for a 29-yard touchdown just before half-time of Green Bay's win over the Jaguars. After Brees' fumble on the first series the Saints pretty much did whatever they wanted.

His Raiders had already demonstrated considerable resolve just to get to that point.

Manning was 19 of 28 for 207 yards, including a 45-yarder to Odell Beckham Jr. set up the first TD.

The first time, rookie Wil Lutz missed a 50-yard field goal and the second time the Saints settled for his 20-yard field goal after having first-and-goal from the 8.

Rookie and Louisiana native Jalen Richard's 75-yard touchdown run and a crucial pass interference penalty against linebacker Craig Robertson on fourth down stood out as backbreakers for the beleaguered New Orleans defense. Then the Giants emphasized the run to use most of the clock, quite a contrast to last season when questionable clock management contributed to six losses late in regulation or in overtime in a 6-10 season.

"If we had made just one or two more plays", Brees said, "this game is different".

"Well, it was just one of these games where we knew Cadet was going to have a big role in his position, and it really just came down to the numbers", Payton said.

INJURIES: Raiders right tackle Menelik Watson left the game late in the first half with what team officials said was a groin pull.

Gutsy call or something else? "I think the long run hurt". First round draft pick Will Fuller led the team with five catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.

That's a big blow, considering that Breaux has established himself as one of New Orleans' top defensive players and since the Saints are extremely thin on experience behind him. Snead finished with 9 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown. Williams and undrafted rookies De'Vante Harris and Ken Crawley. Ware finished the day with 199 total yards for the Chiefs, including 129 yards through the air.
