Olympic and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray picked up where he left off in Rio by drubbing Argentina's Juan Monaco to take his place in the third round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday.
So, it's advantage Murray on that score and also in the career series against Cilic, who has beaten Murray only twice in their 13 senior level matches.
Tomic looked to exploit Murray's back pain, moving the ball from side to side at every opportunity but failed with the Scot's ability to penetrate from defensive strokes.
Some Murray miscues led to another break two games later, and although the Scotsman broke back in the eighth game and held for 4-5, Cilic served up a love game to close out the set.
Murray has now won his last 10 sets and still hasn't lost a singles match since losing the French Open Final. "I was a little bit nervous before the match because I had two weeks after without matches".
"I'm definitely going to try to enforce those things because these are the moments that I can really work on those things, incorporate those things, and hopefully overcome those things".
Two-time Cincinnati victor Murray, playing with impressive energy and broke Raonic again in the ninth game to close out the first set.
"Obviously today it didn't go how I would've wanted".
"I played pretty well today".
In the second upset of the day on Center Court, 19-year-old Borna Coric routed No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-3 to advance to his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals. Like everyone says, it's tough, the first match of the tournament. "I think she might be a little bit exhausted or she felt a little bit of pressure on herself", Pliskova said. Speaking after the match, he said: "I'm very proud of this week. I feel like I get my timing a bit quicker that way".
The win is Murray's 22nd win on the bounce, a wonderful run that is the longest winning streak of his career.
The Swiss tennis player - the second seed at the last major tune-up prior to the US Open - defeated 122nd-ranked American teenager Jared Donaldson 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. A second set point happened after Murray got some help from the net, but this time, the Canadian couldn't save it followed by a forehand unforced error.
