Baseball roundup: Matt Wieters' homer leads Orioles over Blue Jays

Can the O's bounce back after a 5-1 loss last night?

The Cardinals' Jhonny Peralta led off the 10th with a single off Corey Knebel (0-2) and moved to third on Yadier Molina's ground-rule double. He tied a season high with nine strikeouts, including six looking, as he benefited from home plate umpire Alan Porter's generously wide strike zone.

The Orioles pulled within three games of the first-place Blue Jays, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

METS 7, MARLINS 4: Curtis Granderson came off the bench and homered twice, Jose Reyes had four hits and host NY won its eighth in 10 games. Brady Holt, Chris Young and Sandy Leon drove in two runs apiece to help Rick Porcello become the majors' first 18-game victor of the season.

Scherzer (15-7) was near-untouchable early and merely terrific late as he pitched eight innings, gave up two runs on three hits and a walk.

By taking the first two games of the four-game series, NY (68-64) moved ahead of slumping Miami for second place in the NL East. The Indians still top the AL Central by 4 1/2 games over Detroit.

Saunders worked himself into a favourable 3-1 count, then pounded his 22nd home run way gone to right field to tie the game.

The Orioles got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning thanks to Steve Pearce, who homered off of Happ for the fifth time in 28 career at bats. Baltimore remains in line at least for a shot at the wild-card game but is slipping back in the division race.

Marco Estrada (8-6) allowed just one run on J.J. Hardy's third inning home run and four hits in seven-plus innings. Edwin Encarnacion has hit 130 times with 83 runs, 36 homers and 106 RBI. He took Grilli deep for a two-run homer onto the flag court to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead.

Following this three game set, they will travel to Tampa Bay and NY before returning to Toronto to host the Red Sox and Rays. McHugh allowed just five baserunners over his six innings while recording five strikeouts for his second consecutive victory.

Miley, who came to Baltimore with the reputation of being an innings eater, entered the night with an 8.18 ERA in his previous five starts with the Orioles, and he had reached six full innings just once. Jayson Werth homered to put the Nationals ahead two batters into the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jacoby Ellsbury's 10th-inning infield single with two out scored pinch runner Aaron Hicks as NY outlasted Kansas City.

MILWAUKEE - Randal Grichuk's 10th-inning RBI single to shallow right right drove in the go-ahead run as St. Louis beat Milwaukee at Miller Park.

The Mets won for the seventh time in 10 games by beating Miami 2-1 on a walk-off homer by Yoenis Cespedes in the bottom of the 10th.

INDIANS 5, TWINS 4: Francisco Lindor drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and Cleveland survived another poor start by Josh Tomlin, extending the visiting Twins' losing streak to 12 games. The outcome leaves the Mets and Marlins 2 1/2 games behind the Redbirds for the second NL wild-card slot. The veteran Feldman has compiled a 3.68 ERA for the 2016 season but has also given up 10 runs in 11.1 innings of work since becoming a Blue Jay.

The team may have surrendered some young talent at the trade deadline but may have gotten some back within the Liriano deal. Left-hander Steven Brault was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to start in place of Cole tonight against the Cubs. For Saunders it was his 22nd home run of the season and fourth career dinger off Baltimore's erratic righty Ubaldo Jimenez.
